This blog post was written in 2018, but it still very much applies to the present day today, of 2019. I never got around to clicking the “publish” button, I believe, because I was questioning my faith, but so much of what is written below still holds true to my life and goal visions.
I spent one of my Saturday nights mind mapping some of the goals I would like to chase in 2018.
What is mind mapping? It is a strategy of visualizing what is in your mind down onto paper.
An example of a mind map is in the photo I posted below.
What are examples of some of my goals?
- Dream job: English Language Fellow Program with the U.S. State Department
- Branding in 2018: Blogging, Blogging, Social Media
I was feeling off – I’m usually very excited when I write down my goals, dreams, and ideas… but this time the creative juices weren’t flowing.
Then, I remembered something. I thought “maybe I can mind map about my relationship with God.”
I finally figured out why I was feeling off. I was trying to be excited about my goals and dreams and forgot WHY I wanted to do them.
Some of the realizations and reminders that I came up with:
- alignment with WHY you are doing what you’re doing
- love is the grounding of everything you should do. Love of people, work, service, family, friends, self, etc.
- purpose is what will drive you, propel you, towards happiness and fulfillment
- His plans will ALWAYS be better than mine
- gratitude with everything you have in life even though others may not see it the same way that you do
- serving others
- soul-fulfilling jobs are looked for intentionally
- He wants you to have joy in your life
- Find the light in the midst of darkness
- Strength means to keep going
- He knows what’s in your heart
- God wants you to create and facilitate opportunities for healing
I needed a subtle reminder that everything I do is for purpose, and for God. It’s easy to forget this vital part of my belief and being when I’m busy thinking about other things and people.
I can create my biggest life aspirations down onto paper, but I know that without having God in the center of it all would mean, at least for me, nothing at all.
I spent a Saturday night in solitude and with God. I realigned myself with my visions and beliefs, which isn’t always easy. This is what I would call “soul work.” Sometimes we can be so busy living a “good” and “successful” life that we only remember to try and be closer with God when the situations in our life are spinning out of control.
Have you ever had a moment with God where everything that has ever happened in your life comes back, and you think to yourself: “Holy. What. I’m still here, through it all.” I could list down all of the life incidents i’ve encountered, but I would like to save that for another conversation.
Chasing goals and living a life abroad isn’t all glamour and rainbow. I believe the biggest challenge I have sometimes is being grounded, and remembering that I have chosen to live a life in service FOR A REASON so that I can give back and help people grow while I am growing personally, professionally, and spiritually as well.
Once I was finished mind mapping “God,” I went back to looking at my other goals: branding and eventually aiming for the English Language Fellow position. I remember that I put so much effort in creating a social media platform because it isn’t just about me anymore: some of my writings have inspired my readers to seek healing and finally face their truths. Maybe it has opened up their minds to speak for others, and to not default to silence when something has gone wrong.
I remembered why I wanted to get the English Language Fellowship position. While I am an English Language teacher, it will also give me the platform to be able to hold workshops about minority rights and raising awareness about sexual assault in and outside of the workplace.
My blurry visions are beginning to make sense again, and it’s a matter of finding solitude and spending time with God.
What about you? What are your goals for (2018 )— > 2019! ? Have you tried mind mapping before, and what are your purposes behind your goals that you would like to achieve this year?
